WHAT YOUR HEART SAYS
“I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done” (Philippians 3:7 NLT).
When, what, and how you give reveals what matters to you. You can look at how someone spends their time and money and you know right away what their heart is saying. Time is measured by a schedule so take a look at that to see what your heart says. Look at your checking account ledger and see what your heart is telling you there.
Life is not about things. It takes so long to get to that for some people, myself included. Life is learning how to love. What do you think is the more successful side of this equation? You lived your life and amassed a giant pile of stuff. In living that life, you are estranged from your family.
Being generous with your time, money, effort, and energy is your heart saying that God and people are what matter most. What matters most is 1st our love for God, then next our love FOR ALL people. That includes everyone!
In today’s verse, Paul talks about what he once thought was valuable is now worthless. So even Paul had to go through learning about what was important in life. He says it pales in comparison to what Christ has done for us.
How do we jettison being beholden to materialism? The cure, my friends, is to give. Don’t take in and accumulate, but constantly give out and away to others. Give yourself; give your heart and your love to God and others.
“We are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.” PHILIPPIANS 3: 20 NLT
Our purpose is not to live for the here and now.
Our purpose is in storing up for eternity.
Our purpose is not to build a pile of stuff here but to build and invest and give into people and relationships that will matter into heaven.
