TRUST AND RESPONSIBILITY
“Whoever can be trusted with a little can also be trusted with a lot . . . If you cannot be trusted with things that belong to someone else, who will give you things of your own?” (Luke 16:10, 12 NCV).
To grow, we need experiences that stretch us and reveal our talents so as to develop our lives for ministry. We need challenges to develop responsibility. One of the greatest life skills we need to learn and to impart to others is that of responsibility.
How is responsibility taught? Only one way really. Give the student of responsibility an opportunity and trust them with it. Will they make mistakes? Surely so! Did I make mistakes? A ton!! Will they be irresponsible? Yes
Giving responsibility means also giving up control! I have heard many parents say that if they had it all to do over again that they would do less for their children and teach them to do more for themselves. Again, the only way we grow is to be challenged and stretched. This will develop us and build responsibility in our lives. If we are trusted with a little so we are trusted with a lot….If we cannot be trusted ….who will give us things of our own.
People respond to responsibility. Trust people enough to give them responsibility.
“Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer
