STARVED TO BE HOLY
As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.”—Psalm 42:1
Ever been hangry? This is that feeling when you are so hungry it irritates you and makes you mad and angry or hangry. Most of us get irritable and are not happy when we go hungry especially for some period of time. If we are honest, we are thinking about our next meal when we wake up, at lunch, or what is for dinner and it dominates our thoughts.
Whereas, I do know some people who actually “forget” to eat. That astounds me. I always have had a great memory and especially great when it comes to remembering to eat. I can tell you how many hours, minutes, and seconds until I will be eating again. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus talks of another kind of hunger.
Jesus said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” MATT. 5: 6 NKJV. Blessed here also means happy. When we are empty of sin, we are hungry for God. A happy person will desperately, passionately desire a righteous life.
When people say “I don’t need to read the Bible that much or to be in church all the time either” it saddens me as to what they are missing out on. HAPPY are those who hunger for righteousness. Jesus said “they will be filled.”
In the verse today the Psalmist was hungering and thirsting for righteousness. When we are hungry for God, the only thing to quench that is:….GOD!
LET’S STARVE FOR A HOLY LIFE.
LET’S HUNGER FOR GOD’S BEST FOR US.
“Within me was a hunger of that inward food, Yourself, my God.” St. Augustine
