PEACEFUL REST AND DREAMS
Now in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; and his spirit was so troubled that his sleep left him. Daniel 2:1
Some neuroscientists believe dreams are the brain’s way of consolidating and reviewing memories and experiences in our life. I do not know about you but considering some of the dreams I have had over the years, it would seem dream reviewer has been broadcasting from another world channel. Our dreams can be sweet and pleasant, and they can be sour and disagreeable. The more peaceful our thoughts and memories are, the more likely our dreams will be too.
Paul wrote in Philippians 4: 8 that whatever is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy – “meditate on these things.” The Psalmist prayed in Psalm 4: 8 as well that “I will lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
In the Bible dreams are mentioned more than 80 times, most in the Old Testament. God used dreams for the pagan world to communicate His intent to rulers like Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2 and Pharaoh in Genesis 41. As more of God’s revelation came by the Spirit and the Word, the less frequent the need to communicate by dreams.
To dream peacefully, we must rest peacefully and to do that we need to concentrate on all the positive things Paul wrote about. We rest in God’s refuge and safely slumber in peace when we are close to the Lord. FRANCOIS FENELON said, “We sleep in peace in the arms of God, WHEN WE YIELD OURSELVES UP TO HIS PROVIDENCE.”
Be Humble, Be Repentant, Be Obedient, then Be at Peace with the Father.
